HEARTWORMS
Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes. When an infected mosquito bites a dog it injects heartworm larva into the dog's bloodstream. The blood carries the larva to the heart's pulmonary arteries where they grow to adults while feeding on the vessels and muscles of the heart.

While heartworm disease can be fatal, if detected early enough it can be treated. The key, however, is prevention. Monthly medications such as Heartgard and Interceptor will prevent heartworm disease.

A blood test is initially required to check for heartworms in dogs. Cats are also at risk for heartworm disease and preventatives such as Heartgard or Revolution are recommended.

ROUNDWORMS, HOOKWORMS, & WHIPWORMS
Rounds, Hooks, & Whips are common parasites of the gastrointestinal tract in cats and dogs. They are especially common in puppies and kittens. These worms cause vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss and can be fatal if not treated. They can be treated with dewormers.

These worms are spread through the feces of infected animals and from the mother dog to her puppies. Roundworms and Hookworms can be passed to humans, especially children, by handling infected animals and coming into contact with their feces.

Monthly preventatives for Heartworms can also prevent Roundworms and Hookworms.

FLEAS AND TICKS
Fleas and ticks are external parasites that infest dogs and cats and feed on their blood.

Ticks are vectors for Lyme Disease, Ehrlichia, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Ingested fleas can spread Tapeworms.

Both fleas and ticks can be prevented with Frontline or K9 Advantix. Frontline and K9 Advantix are topical parasiticides that needs to be applied monthly.

EAR MITES
Ear Mites are microscopic parasites that feed on blood in the ears of dogs and cats and cause extensive itching and shaking of the head. Ear Mites may be treated and prevented with Revolution.
